When will Australia open its international borders?

The big question that’s on everyones mind. In fact, there is no definitive date on when Australia will open its international borders worldwide, but recent updates suggest things are looking up for international students.

Australia’s borders are currently closed for tourism purposes to anyone travelling from outside. Entry to Australia remains strictly controlled to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

No date for the reopening of borders has been set by the federal government. However, in mid-August, the prime minister, Scott Morrison said Australia would consider opening its international borders once 80% of the adult population is fully vaccinated.

The national recovery plan says once states and the country reach 80 per cent of the eligible population fully vaccinated, the cap on return travelers will be lifted and all restrictions on outbound travel for vaccinated Australians will go.

Initial estimates had the country reaching the double dose vaccination rate targets by the end of the year.

Restart of international flights

Also, Qantas, Australia’s most popular airline, announced that they are preparing for a gradual restart of international flights from mid-December 2021. At the present time, all Qantas international flights are currently suspended, due to government restrictions.

Flights would start from Australia to COVID-safe destinations; which are highly likely to be classed as low risk countries for vaccinated travelers to visit and return with reduced quarantine requirements, pending decisions by the Australian Government and entry policies of other countries.
