When you are on a temporary student visa it is a requirement to have proper health insurance for the whole duration of your visa.
In Australia this type of medical insurance is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). This means that before you arrive in Australia you will need to have arranged and purchased health cover for the total duration of your stay.
Exemptions:
Some exceptions may apply if you are a student from Sweden, Norway, or Belgium. International students from these countries may have special exemptions under your country’s legislation. Australia also has reciprocal health agreements (RHCA) with New Zealand, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Slovenia and Malta but, except Belgium, the rest will still have to obtain OSHC for the whole duration of their stay.
You can check with the department of Immigration of Australia to find out whether you are exempt from purchasing OSHC. Click here to check.
