HEALTH INSURANCE

When you are on a temporary student visa it is a requirement to have proper health insurance for the whole duration of your visa.

In Australia this type of medical insurance is called Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). This means that before you arrive in Australia you will need to have arranged and purchased health cover for the total duration of your stay.

Exemptions:
Some exceptions may apply if you are a student from Sweden, Norway, or Belgium. International students from these countries may have special exemptions under your country’s legislation. Australia also has reciprocal health agreements (RHCA) with New Zealand, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Slovenia and Malta but, except Belgium, the rest will still have to obtain OSHC for the whole duration of their stay.

You can check with the department of Immigration of Australia to find out whether you are exempt from purchasing OSHC. Click here to check.

There are many companies that provide this type of coverages and all of them offer roughly the same service. Oztrip Sevices can guide you with different companies, to define which is the best option for your OSHC policy. Please note that this medical insurance will have to be purchased prior to applying for the student visa.

What is covered by your OSHC

  • Hospital Expenses: Accommodation for overnight or same-day stays, operation theatre, medication provided internally at the hospital, etc.
  • Medical Expenses: OSHC companies have agreements with several general practices where direct billing is possible, and you will not have to pay for anything. However, if you go to a clinic which doesn’t have an agreement with your insurer, you will need to pay for the cost of the consultation upfront and then claim it back.
  • Emergency Ambulance Services: You can claim for your Ambulance transportation and on-the-spot treatment to your provider only if they are considered an emergency.
  • Outpatient pharmacy: You can claim $50 of approved prescriptions (covered by PBS) up to $300 (single cover) or up to $600 (for couples).

Not covered by OSHC

  • Non-emergency Ambulance Services
  • Medicines not covered by PBS
  • Procedures not recognised by Medicare
  • Cosmetic Surgery
  • Dental treatment
  • Physiotherapist and Chiropractic treatments
  • Organised treatments prior to arriving to Australia

Make sure you keep up to date your Overseas Student Health Cover during your whole stay in Australia as it is mandatory to maintain your Student Visa.
